Crispin Cider Dinner

The apple was a leading American crop in colonial days, and fermented — or hard — cider reigned as the young country's most common drink through the early 19th century, as New Orleans-based drinks writer Wayne Curtis has documented in And a Bottle of Rum, his book on New World spirits. It was easy to produce, it kept well and – then, as now — it takes the edge off.…

Shale boom has rails rolling at Port S.A.
05/16/2012

Rail traffic at the port jumped by more than 75 percent in fiscal 2011 compared with the year before, with much of the growth coming from oil field supplies offloaded from railcars to 18-wheelers and bound for drillers in the shale, officials said Tuesday. “San Antonio is becoming the new energy city in Texas,” Castro added, citing a University of Texas at San Antonio study released May 9 that estimates that development in the Eagle Ford Shale will mean a $25 billion economic boost to a 20-county area in south Texas and add 47,000 jobs. McConnell praised San Antonio's efforts to embrace a range of fuels, from fossil fuels to renewables and said that such initiatives support President Barack Obama's “all of the above” energy strategy that advances the use of oil, natural gas, fuel efficiency, wind, solar, biofuels and nuclear power. Other companies who moved into the port early, as did RLI, were Fiesta Warehousing & Distribution, and railcar maker and repair company Greenbrier Cos., which was present at Kelly AFB as it was shutting down and private firms were transitioning in, said Port San Antonio spokesman Paco Felici.

Bronson escapes time in prison
05/16/2012

A jury Tuesday ordered probation for an international flight attendant who admitted to drinking numerous glasses of wine before taking two prescription Ambien and later plowing into two young girls and their mother with her car. The punishment verdicts for intoxication assault and failure to stop and render aid followed more than three hours of jury deliberations and a week of emotional testimony in which the parents of Ava Lopez, 18 months old at the time of the April 2009 wreck, described her fight to survive after incurring severe brain injuries. The only member of the Lopez family to watch the announcement, she left the 290th State District courtroom sobbing, surrounded by friends and district attorney's office staff. [...] jurors couldn't determine the sleep-deprived flight attendant's sentence without first taking into consideration her prescription for the sleep drug Ambien, which has been known to cause sleep-driving episodes, defense attorney Patrick Hancock argued during closing arguments. Prosecutors ended their plea for prison time by holding up pictures in front of the jury box of Ava in the hospital, her tiny, limp body hooked up to a respirator as family members continually held her hand to let her know she wasn't alone.

I-35 shut by wreck as record rain falls
05/16/2012

A total of 9.84 inches of rain in May caused the aquifer to rise 10 feet, from 648 feet to 658 feet above sea level at the J-17 monitoring well. The record-setting rain was blamed for a wreck that killed a San Antonio trucker early Tuesday along Interstate 35 on the south side of New Braunfels. The cab was torn from the vehicle, and the tractor's undercarriage and the trailer swerved across the highway and caught fire, police said. The storm was blamed for power outages that affected 3,000 CPS Energy customers at their peak, a company spokesman said. The high-water rescue was called in about 11 p.m. as the storm system blowing east through the region dumped 1.5 inches on the city in less than three hours, prompting police and public works to check low water crossings throughout the area, officials said. A police officer at the scene of the rescue, who declined to give his name, said the woman turned off Babcock Road onto Hollyhock Road and became stuck in rising water at the Huebner Creek crossing. There were several reports of lightning strikes and electrical fires, including a house fire in the 17000 block of Irongate Pass on the Northeast Side.
